April 1st, 2010, 5-7pm @ AIA Seattle, 1911 First Avenue, Seattle

Showing
March 22 – May 7, M-F 10am-2pm

As Seattle redesigns its waterfront in the coming post-viaduct era, one of the most important questions facing the city is how the crumbling seawall will be replaced.

Local architectural designer Cristina Bump Assoc. AIA was the 2009 recipient of the AIA Emerging Professional Travel Scholarship for her proposal to study innovative seawall designs in Australia and Canada.
After her travels abroad, she returns to document her findings through a model, video, and print exhibition. Of special interest will be large-scale physical models of the different ‘smart’ seawalls studied and how they could be applied to Seattle’s habitat, ecosystem, and tidal patterns. Visit Cristina’s travel blog which outlines her adventure in Australia and follows Seattle’s political process.

Cristina Bump Assoc. AIA, a LEED® Accredited Professional, graduated from Virginia Tech in 2007, and is currently an architectural designer at Mithun.

This exhibition and research were funded by the AIA Seattle Emerging Professionals Travel Scholarship, which seeks to expand the experience and leadership opportunities of young professionals, encourage cross-cultural dialogue in the profession, and share knowledge from architecture practice around the globe with members in Puget Sound. The scholarship supports travel for the purposes of research, community service, education, or collaboration.
Renaissance Seattle Hotel is putting the finishing touches on a $28 million facelift in hopes of attracting more business travelers and groups to the downtown Seattle hotel.

The top-to-bottom renovation — which launched about two years ago — is almost completed. The 553-room hotel has a new lobby bar and lounge, fitness center and a new 5,000-square-foot banquet room.

The project predates the recession, said Rene Neidhart, general manager of the 28-story hotel, which is franchised under Marriott’s upscale Renaissance Hotels and Resorts brand. The project is part of Marriott’s efforts to spiff up the brand and attract more guests.

The timing of the renovations was fortuitous, Neidhart said, allowing the hotel to land new business during a slump. Neidhart said the second ballroom allows the hotel to have several groups in at the same time.

Such is the case in April when groups such as the Catholic Cemeteries of the West are having meetings. Other groups booked in April in including the National Organization of Veterans Advocates Inc. and the Administrative Offices of the United States Courts.

With the second banquet room, the hotel has seen an 8 percent increase in group rooms rentals, compared to the year before, Neidhart said.

Renaissance promotes a local experience. In Seattle, that means everything form stocking mostly Northwest wines, to conducting architectural and arts walks to beer tastings at Pike Place Market or exposing guests to the city’s popular cafes as part of a coffee culture tour.

Renaissance Seattle Hotel was affected by the recession, but the hotel has fared better than some of its competitors.

Hotels in Seattle saw a 19 percent decline in 2009 in revenue per available room — an industry statistic widely used to measure a hotel’s overall financial performance. Seattle Renaissance’s revenue per available room last year declined by 4 percent, Neidhart said.

“The landscape for us looks a little better than other hotels,” he said.

Effective August 2010, 100% of air cargo flown on passenger aircraft must be screened according to the 9/11 Act enacted by Congress. Unscreened cargo will not be permitted to fly, potentially leading to logjams at airports, delays of time-sensitive cargo, and compromising product integrity. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) responded by developing a supply chain-based program to aid industry in meeting the mandate and mitigate risks to cargo velocity. Learn more about the benefits of TSA’s program, the Certified Cargo Screening Program (CCSP), and how it provides businesses with options to screen cargo cost-effectively and efficiently at various points in the supply chain.

Screen cargo where it is packaged, without invasive screening or manipulation later in the supply chain

Maintain in-house packaging integrity

Avoid screening logjams (air carrier delays) at the airport

Build bulk configurations to minimize transport cost and maximize efficiency

I’m in the throes of raising $20,000 to fund a volunteer project I conceived and planned – The Global Citizen Project. I’ve traveled around the globe in the capacity of a professional journalist and have been profoundly impacted by the communities most underserved. It is my plan to swap my BlackBerry for a backpack and promote 12 selected causes and communities, as well as responsible travel via my platform as a journalist.

If funded by February 22, 2010, TGCP will allow me to serve 12 different community causes in 12 countries over 12 months, including helping to revive tourism efforts and help with long-term economic recovery in Haiti.

The Global Citizen Project has raised more than $10,000 so far, but only has 13 days remaining to reach its $20,000 funding goal or else the project will not happen and I will not receive a cent. Donations start at $1 and there are several tokens of gratitude being offered for different levels of pledges, including:

•	ANY pledge: Free beer (coupon) at Watch City Brewing Company in Waltham, MA
•	$10 pledge: One free burrito, burrito bowl, salad or order of tacos at Chipotle (Valid in WA and OR only)
•	$25 pledge: Theo Bread and Dark Chocolate Bar
•	$40 pledge: Moroccanoil Travel Kit & large hairbrush
•	$40 pledge: Elvis Cirque du Soleil Program Book
•	$50 pledge: The Seattle TourSaver 2-for-1 coupon book
•	$50 pledge: Half-pound of coffee from Lighthouse Roasters
•	$60 pledge: Spa robes
•	$100 pledge: 12 postcards from the 12 volunteer destinations
•	$100 pledge: One night stay at Ace Seattle
•	$100 pledge: Complete line of Kyoku for Men, luxury Japanese grooming line
•	$125 pledge: One night stay at Hotel Vintage Park, a Kimpton boutique property in Seattle
•	$150 pledge: One night stay at Tulalip Resort Casino + $25 food credit, Marysville, WA (about 30 miles north of Seattle)
•	$300 pledge: Two night stay at The Woodmark Hotel Yacht Club & Spa in Kirkland, WA
•	$750 pledge: Two night, all-inclusive stay at Hacienda Tres Rios Hacienda Tres Rios Resort, Spa & Nature Park, Riviera Maya, México
•	$1000 pledge: Three-night stay at The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort on Waikiki Beach in Oahu
•	$1500 pledge: Sponsor one month and pick one of my 12 volunteer projects

Time is of the essence as I near the final stretch for fundraising, and I would be greatly appreciative if you’d consider making a pledge. Every little bit helps and you can even pledge less than the cost of a cup of coffee.

I haven’t made it this far without tremendous amounts of collaborative kindness and support and thank you in advance for any love you can show to The Global Citizen Project.

With many thanks and gratitude,
Charyn Pfeuffer

“Through my correspondence with Charyn and the media coverage I’ve seen, the goal of her Global Citizen Project is more widespread, macroscopic, and holistic. She means to highlight challenges and opportunities around the globe, as well as a sample of the efforts some organizations are taking to respond to these opportunities.”
