Costello, vice president and station manager for Belo Seattle, has been a board member since 2010. In his role as board chair, he is committed to providing leadership on key strategies related to fundraising and corporate partnership. “Unfortunately, almost everyone is either personally or close to someone who has been touched by heart disease. I am proud to be associated with an organization that is so committed to changing that dynamic,” he said.

As a cardiologist, Dr. Stout sees the impact of heart disease on adults and children every day, and as board president is committed to strengthening local community programs and mission-related activities by the AHA. Dr. Stout said, “I’m excited for the opportunity to work with the American Heart Association to improve the cardiovascular health of children and adults in Puget Sound.”

The AHA also welcomes the following new board members: Trisha Cohen, community advocate; Rosanne Dickerson, chief human resource officer Wash./Mont. region, Providence Health & Services; Kent Fisher, vice president, supply chain management – commercial airplanes, The Boeing Company; and Stephen Zieniewicz, executive director, UW Medical Center.

The AHA is the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary health organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke. Its mission is to build healthier lives by preventing, treating and defeating these diseases – two of America’s leading killers. In Washington state alone, the AHA funds more than $6.5-million in cutting-edge research, and works to improve the health of our communities by conducting public and professional educational programs, and advocating for health policies that protect public health. In Seattle, the key initiatives by the AHA include CPR/AED training, Go Red For Women, Heart Ball, Heart Walk, and My Heart My Life. To learn more, visit www.heart.org/PugetSound.

FOCUS ON: Creating Sustainable Funding for your Nonprofit Organization

Sustainable funding is about shifting the culture of individual fundraising from strong-arming and landing one-time donors to developing relationships and creating passionate and committed lifelong donors.

Join us for July’s Focus On as Terry Axelrod, founder and CEO of Benevon, shows us how sustainable funding can easily be incorporated into your organization and how you can start engaging lifelong individual donors today!

The Aquarian Centers for Smile and Life Mastery (ACSLM), an emerging nonprofit organization in Washington State, provides and facilitates programs and services which promote Oral Health, General Health, Wellness and Successful Living. ʻSmile Masteryʼ a term coined by founder and executive director, Esi A. Quaidoo DDS is the process of identifying, developing and nurturing that inner smile, and integrating it with a healthy attractive outer smile to promote health, wellness, a state of empowerment and total well being.

The mouth is the gateway to the body and a healthy mouth makes for a healthy body. Oral disease unfortunately has been linked with many disease states such as Diabetes, Heart disease, Oropharyngeal Cancers, tooth loss, pain as well as many undesired emotional and stressful states.

On a brighter note, an Attractive, Healthy Smile has been shown to trigger instant positive and seemingly magical emotional responses and attitudes in people the world over. A Smile can be an effective mood changer, stress reliever, and immune system booster. Smiling often can reverse the aging process, make you look years younger, help you stay positive, and help you feel good. An attractive healthy smile can boost your self-esteem. Studies have shown that smiling releases endorphins and serotonin, your bodyʼs natural pain killers and feel good chemicals, into your body without the side effects that are typical for most drugs on the market. Smiling has even been shown to lower blood pressure. In todayʼs competitive world, Smiling is a great way to stand out and distinguish yourself as confident, attractive, and successful whilst helping your body to function better. Smiling has no known negative side effects on the body, is a universal form of communication and is the most contagious phenomenon on the planet.

The Aquarian Centers for Smile and Life Mastery provides access to Oral Care, Wellness Education, and helps to identify and overcome some of the other barriers to Smile Mastery, important yet often underestimated roadblocks in the pursuit of happiness and total well being. Educational and Coaching topics include ʻSmoking Cessationʼ, ʻStress and Anxiety Managementʼ, ʻOvercoming Fearʼ, and ʻLife Skills Coachingʼ. In addition, ACSLM services employ alternative modalities such as Reiki and Neurolinguistic Programming(NLP). Learn more about ACSLM and how you can benefit from and support this powerful and worthwhile cause by going to http://ACSLM.org.

Based in San Francisco, Chic Meets Geek™ is designed to bridge the social gap between the cultural chic and intellectual geeks. It is similar to a conference, but with a social atmosphere. The purpose is to gather two different groups in one room to inspire, share, and connect through a panel of geek and chic celebrity speakers to talk about their inspirational background. A nonprofit beneficiary is highlighted at every Chic Meets Geek™ event and themed around the speaker panelists’ expertise to bridge the gap. It’s where tech conference meets red carpet meets charity fundraiser.

The event on Wednesday, August 18th will highlight and connect the flourishing Seattle community of extraordinary chic and geek leaders, businesses, performance artists, and non-profits. Jolkona Foundation and Washington Cash are the non-profit beneficiaries of the event.

Chic Meets Geek™ is teaming up with Gnomedex to be the “Opening Celebration Event” to honor humble, but extraordinary, geek and chic leaders, businesses, and non-profits. On August 18th, Chic Meets Geek™ will challenge attendees with thought-provoking ideas and situations. There will be speakers, performance artists, tech/chic demos, all-you-can-eat and drink, and a unique networking opportunity for all guests. It’s a power networking event for the extroverts to the wallflowers. The event will be hosted at the ultra-chic Hotel 1000 in Seattle, WA and tickets can be purchased on the website, http://chicmeetsgeek.com.
