Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce, the largest and most diverse network of influential business leaders in the Puget Sound region, is currently seeking candidates for a 3-to-6-month paid social media/communications and web internship. This is a part-time position (approximately 20 hours per week).

The social media/ communications and web intern reports to the Communications team.

Position Responsibilities:

• Importing/entering/formatting entries for the Chamber’s business promotion site, www.itstimeforbusiness.com. Working closely with communications, membership and small business teams to enhance site features and drive traffic.
• Helping to promote www.itstimeforbusiness.com entries on the Chamber’s Facebook and Twitter and other social media pages.
• Copy editing and writing
• HTML Coding/email support and creation for eBlasts and other marketing collateral
• Monitoring/compiling data for social media sites and assisting with tracking reports.
• Assisting with Chamber website redesign and other website updates.
• Performing other administrative and communication duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Pursuing or have recently secured a degree in marketing, communications, public relations or other related field
• Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook and Office software
• Dependable schedule
• A sincere interest in the internet, blogs and social networking
• Experience with Word Press sites and administration

Applications for AmeriCorps positions that begin in fall 2010 are now being accepted by the Washington Service Corps. Members serve with nonprofit organizations and local government agencies to address community needs, such as tutoring at-risk youths, fighting poverty, restoring waterways and preparing communities for disasters. In return, they’ll receive a monthly stipend and an education award that can be used for college costs.

“Answering the call to public service changes communities and changes lives,” said Employment Security Commissioner Karen Lee. “The personal and financial rewards make it a great option for anyone who wants to make a difference.”

More than 1,000 positions will start in September 2010 and last for 10½ to 12 months of full-time service. Varying levels of experience and education are accepted, and applicants must be at least 17 years old.  Members receive a living allowance as well as an education award of $5,350 that can be used for college costs or to pay off qualified student loans.

Funding comes primarily from the federal government and is distributed to local communities by the Washington Service Corps, which is operated by the state Employment Security Department.

Upper School English Teacher

Full-Time (1.0 FTE)

Lakeside School, an independent coeducational day school located in North Seattle, Washington, is currently recruiting for an Upper School English Teacher, for the 2010-11 school year (beginning in mid to late August, 2010).

Responsibilities:

The English Teacher position, reporting to the Upper School English Department Head, will join a highly collaborative department that consists of 9 faculty members and offers a full range of courses in English, American and world literatures.  The Lakeside English Department has implemented new grade-level curricula, incorporating broad multicultural elements from world literature in 9^th and 10^th grades, and core texts in American Cultural Studies in the fall semester of 11^th grade—the latter complementing juniors’ study of U.S. history.  Spring semester of 11^th grade continues studies in American Literature, with themes and texts selected by individual instructors. The English Department’s 12^th-grade electives emphasize literary traditions and genres as they play out across a multicultural spectrum, and they also include several interdisciplinary courses involving team-teaching with other departments. Specific responsibilities for this position include:

• Teaching 4 sections of classes in some combination of different grade levels.  All courses emphasize the study of fiction, poetry and drama and the craft of writing in different modes.  Classes study, discuss, and write about literary genres as expressions derived from various cultural and historical contexts.  Maximum class sizes are set at 18 students, with average class sizes between 15 and 16 students;
• Providing academic support for students outside of class time (answering homework questions, providing extra help, etc.), as needed;
• Active collaboration and participation in the work of the English Department on innovative curriculum development, pedagogy, and assessment;
• Attending department and faculty meetings as scheduled;
• Acting as an advisor to between 8 and 10 Upper School students;
• Active participation in the life of the school community, which includes assuming at least one additional out-of the classroom duty, such as advising a student club, joining a standing committee, etc.

Requirements:

The successful applicant will have at least a bachelor’s in English and a master’s degree in English, education, or a related field (comparative literature, rhetoric and composition, cultural studies). Candidates having academic preparation in or experience teaching texts from a variety of countries around the world are also preferred. Experience in teaching high-school-aged students is desired, though those whose teaching has focused on early college years are also encouraged to apply. Familiarity with computers and an interest in technology integration in the English curriculum is essential (PC/Windows platform).
