The English Department’s 12th-grade electives emphasize literary traditions and genres as they play out across a multicultural spectrum, and they also include several interdisciplinary courses involving team-teaching with other departments. Specific responsibilities for this position include:

Teaching 4 sections of classes in some combination of different grade levels. All courses emphasize the study of fiction, poetry and drama and the craft of writing in different modes. Classes study, discuss, and write about literary genres as expressions derived from various cultural and historical contexts. Maximum class sizes are set at 18 students, with average class sizes between 15 and 16 students;

Providing academic support for students outside of class time (answering homework questions, providing extra help, etc.), as needed;

Active collaboration and participation in the work of the English Department on innovative curriculum development, pedagogy, and assessment;

Attending department and faculty meetings as scheduled;

Acting as an advisor to between 8 and 10 Upper School students;

Active participation in the life of the school community, which includes assuming at least one additional out-of the classroom duty, such as advising a student club, joining a standing committee, etc.

Requirements:

The successful applicant will have at least a bachelor’s in English and a master’s degree in English, education, or a related field (comparative literature, rhetoric and composition, cultural studies). Candidates having academic preparation in or experience teaching texts from a variety of countries around the world are also preferred. Experience in teaching high-school-aged students is desired, though those whose teaching has focused on early college years are also encouraged to apply. Familiarity with computers and an interest in technology integration in the English curriculum is essential (PC/Windows platform).

Salary & Benefits:

Lakeside School is committed to attracting and retaining outstanding faculty by providing a competitive compensation package. This package includes, but is not limited to, a monthly salary, excellent health and welfare benefits, access to funds for professional development, housing down payment assistance program and school provided lunches. Additionally, Lakeside offers Faculty and Staff opportunities to participate in non-classroom teaching programs such as Global Service Learning, Summer School, Coaching, etc., for extra compensation.

Additional Information:

Lakeside School was founded in 1919, and currently enrolls 776 students in grades 5 through 12 from diverse ethnic, racial, religious, and economic backgrounds.

The School’s Mission and the shared commitment of all Lakeside employees is to develop in intellectually capable young people the creative minds, healthy bodies, and ethical spirits needed to contribute wisdom, compassion, and leadership to a global society. We provide a rigorous, dynamic academic program through which effective educators lead students to take responsibility for learning.
