Washington is the second-most sustainable state in the country, ranking only behind California, according to Site Selection magazine, which released its inaugural sustainability rankings this week.

In the magazine’s city list, the San Francisco Bay Area ranks at the top while Seattle is nowhere to be seen in the top cities.

Its top sustainable nation list elevates Canada to the top spot followed by Brazil and China. The United States was not in the top 10.

Published by Conway Data Inc., Site Selection magazine examined corporate facility management in green technology sectors to weight its sustainability index. The list’s creators also gave points for factors that make those investments possible including government policies. The number of LEED-certified green buildings also factored into the calculation.

The study pointed to Fluor Corp.’s completion of Renewable Energy Corp.’s Silicon IV silane gas plant for its Moses Lake Expansion Project in eastern Washington state, southwest of Spokane. The plant will provide silane gas for the production of high-grade polysilicon for solar panel manufacturing.
