Thursdays, May 13th & 20th, 2010
A capacity building workshop hosted by Global Washington and facilitated by Eric Becker, Writer/Producer and Social Media Strategist. In this revolutionary age of media, how can non-profits take advantage of the changing landscape to communicate and build community? This workshop will give a background on the phenomenon of social media, look at successful ways it has been embraced by the NP community, and offer ideas on how individuals, organizations, and institutions can improve the way they communicate within the changing media paradigm.

The new media model is about individuals and organizations being responsible for publishing content. In this workshop, we’ll take a tour of Twitter, Facebook and WordPress and examine some exemplary usages pertaining to non-profits, and get into the nitty-gritty of how to get started with each service. Participants will walk away knowing how to sort through the noise, blog, tweet, and build community using these three revolutionary technologies. Laptop required!

Eric Becker is an Seattle-based writer/producer who has been working internationally for the past 8 years. He received his MPH with a focus in global health from Yale University in 2006. Eric currently consults as a new media strategist for value-driven organizations, helping them utilize storytelling and new technologies to communicate with their stakeholders and build community around their ideas.
