Smart Seawalls: A Travel Study

Posted by kims in Articles, Events

Opening Reception
April 1st, 2010, 5-7pm @ AIA Seattle, 1911 First Avenue, Seattle

Showing
March 22 – May 7, M-F 10am-2pm

As Seattle redesigns its waterfront in the coming post-viaduct era, one of the most important questions facing the city is how the crumbling seawall will be replaced.

Local architectural designer Cristina Bump Assoc. AIA was the 2009 recipient of the AIA Emerging Professional Travel Scholarship for her proposal to study innovative seawall designs in Australia and Canada.
After her travels abroad, she returns to document her findings through a model, video, and print exhibition. Of special interest will be large-scale physical models of the different ‘smart’ seawalls studied and how they could be applied to Seattle’s habitat, ecosystem, and tidal patterns.   Visit Cristina’s travel blog which outlines her adventure in Australia and follows Seattle’s political process.

Cristina Bump Assoc. AIA, a LEED® Accredited Professional, graduated from Virginia Tech in 2007, and is currently an architectural designer at Mithun.

This exhibition and research were funded by the AIA Seattle Emerging Professionals Travel Scholarship, which seeks to expand the experience and leadership opportunities of young professionals, encourage cross-cultural dialogue in the profession, and share knowledge from architecture practice around the globe with members in Puget Sound.   The scholarship supports travel for the purposes of research, community service, education, or collaboration. The Scholarship was founded by the AIA Seattle Fellows and Honors Committee, and is generously funded by contributions from local College of Fellows members, AIA members, and design leaders.
