The Good Life: books for better living presents “THE POWER OF HALF: One Family’s Decision to Stop Taking and Start Giving Back”
Posted by kims in Articles, Events
On March 9, spend an evening with father and daughter, Kevin and Hannah Salwen, who set out to make a small difference in the world, and ended up transforming themselves.
I
t all started when 14-year-old Hannah Salwen had a “eureka moment,” seeing a homeless man in her neighborhood alongside a Mercedes coup and said, “You know, Dad, if that man had a less nice car, then that man there could have a meal.”
Until that day, the Salwens were going along like other American families, providing a good life for their children, accumulating stuff, doing their part: but on this day they made the extraordinary decision to sell their large home and give half of all of the profits to a worthy charity. Their plan eventually transported the family across the globe, out of their comfort zone and into a new life where they discovered having “half” could be so much more.
Kevin Salwen was a reporter and editor at The Wall Street Journal for many years and is the founder of Motto magazine. Hannah Salwen is a junior at the Atlanta Girl’s School, where she plays for the varsity volleyball team and volunteers at the Atlanta Community Food Bank and Café. Their family’s story has been featured in media such as Oprah, People Magazine and a fascinating interview of them by The New York Times’ Nick Kristof is here.
Warren Etheredge (www.thewarrenreport.com) will lead the interactive conversation that evening at Tom Douglas’ Palace Ballroom, where we will enjoy appetizers, a cash bar, Theo chocolate confections and every attendee gets to take home a copy of The Power of Half as well—all included in the $35 per person price.
Join us for an amazing evening!
